TETRA Health & Environment

The societies and their individual members are becoming increasingly conscious of their environment and the importance of maintaining safe and secure conditions for sustainable development. This awareness is reflected in the legislation where new regulation is created for product safety, recycling of end-of-life products, etc., matters that the manufacturers and distributors of products need to accommodate in their processes.

Mobile technologies and safety
Safety of mobile communications equipment is sometimes raising concerns among users of the equipment and also amongst the public. In addition to the electromagnetic emissions from radio transmitters, the visual appearance of radio masts in the landscape is becoming more under debate. As a consequence, the mobile communications industry – both operators and manufacturers – have during recent years put considerable effort in both contributing to scientific research to clarify and quantify the physiological effects of radio waves and in developing more environment friendly antenna solutions to minimise the impact caused by the increasing number of radio masts.

As a result of extensive research the international community has set clear safety rules for the allowed emission levels of radio waves that all mobile communications equipment need to meet in order to be permitted to enter the market. The emission limits, such as the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) measurement standards for mobile handsets, vary slightly between continents, but they all incorporate a safety margin to ensure safety of the product under all conditions. Links to the research organisations and their reports are provided further down this page. It should be noted that in Europe (EU) all radio handsets must comply with the SAR measurement standards to qualify for the CE mark needed to place products on the market.

Safety Concerns and TETRA
During recent years some public concern has been raised about the TETRA technology and exposure to radio frequency energy. The TETRA Association recognises and understands the basis of these concerns and takes, very seriously, any questions relating to the Health and Safety of the general public and also the users of TETRA technology.

The TETRA Association welcomes expert research into all safety aspects of radio communications and indeed a number of its members have, and continue to make contributions to this type of funded research. The TETRA Association also recognises the international standards bodies and experts that create standards, which recommend safety levels for RF exposure and other health and safety issues relating to the safe operation of radio telecommunications equipment. The TETRA Association further recognises the need for continuing relevant and high quality physiological and epidemiological research and will continue to monitor and keep abreast of the very latest research results.

TETRA & Health information
The TETRA Association is a member in the UK TETRA Industry Group (see www.tetrahealth.info) that is body formed to continually monitor the research and public debate related to the electromagnetic fields of TETRA equipment.  In addition, to contributing to that debate with research based information, the UK TETRA Industry Group also publishes leaflets explaining the facts and sources to further information. The TETRA health leaflets can be downloaded also via the link below.

The amount of research reports produced during recent years on the electromagnetic fields of mobile communications equipment is numerous and the number is increasing. Substantial amount of these reports are accessible through organisations like World Health Organisation (WHO), Mobile Manufacturers Forum (MMF) and national health organisations.

TETRA and Electromagnetic Energy
TETRA is a digital mobile radio standard that has been developed by ETSI over a ten year period and is designed to provide the emergency services, public utilities, transport organisations and other users of mobile communications with greatly improved communications than previous analogue technologies. Since 1997, TETRA networks have been deployed throughout Europe and many other regions of the world. Networks are now operational and those involved in public safety are already enjoying the benefits of improved voice quality, better coverage and enhanced facilities enabling them to carry out their duties with increased effectiveness. Public operators too, are already providing TETRA Public Access Mobile Radio (PAMR) services in a number of European countries. Read more…
